Changuu Island, also called Prison Island, is situated on the western portion of Zanzibar Island, not far from Stone Town, and shares a boundary with Grave Island, Snake Island, and Bawe Island. From the Stone Town beach, it takes around twenty-five minutes by local boat.

The popular Giant Tortoises, which can live up to 200 years, are the island’s main draw.

a jail constructed in 1892. Being a well-known location for the enormous tortoise, it was never really used as a prison and is now a tourist attraction. 

From the 1860s until the end of the slave trade, the sultans utilized the island as a prison for escaped slaves. The British thereafter, under the direction of First Governor Lloyd Matthews, started constructing a jail on the island. 

 

The enormous tortoises that were brought in from the Seychelles in the 1800s can be seen there. In addition, there are stunning aquatic life, a coral reef, and the greatest place to go snorkeling. You can feed and pet the tortoises, some of which are over a century old, once you arrive on the island. If you have the time, you might also enjoy walking around the interior forest, where you can view a variety of birds, bats, vibrant peacocks, and stunning butterflies.
